Decorative Letters

ABCDEFG, what can you do with just a letter? Most of my ideas come from the internet, catalogs, or from others. When I started this project I wanted something I could have up at all times of the year. My goal was to eventually have different letters decorated for different themes. Think of what theme you are looking for; a particular season, a holiday, or just a traditional look that can stay up all year. The picture below shows how I decorated my mantle above the fire place. I already had a old window I pulled out of my shed. In the top three open spots I usually put undated pictures of my three girls.

Just an FYI when you buy your first letter you will realize there are several different types of letters: wood ones, card board, light up, ones that stand, ones that are flat, and on and on. I strongly encourage you to think of your project ahead of time.

I have three young kids and at this time in my life FAMILY is a good theme. First thought was how will I decorate each letter so that is somewhat goes together. I also wanted a more dramatic look so I used different sized letters as well. I live on a farm and we try and grow as much of our own things as possible,  I thought nature or and outdoor feel would work: This is what I came  with ...
This cardboard letter is about 2 inches thick. It doesn't stand very well by itself so I have it leaning against my window its approximately 13 inches tall. I then covered it in moss found at any craft store.
This is a simple white flat wood letter about 6 inches. Then I just glued on twigs from my yard around fall time when they were already dried out.
Glued on paper flowers to a wood flat letter M about 12 inches tall.
Bought this right online at Michael's. It lights up with batteries and is approximately 6 inches.
Simply wrapped the wood letter with burlap and glued a decorative burlap flower this letter is about 9 inches.
Used sliver spray paint and tape to make the chevron look on a flat white wood letter about 6 inches.

Other ideas for words: SNOW, HOPE, MUSIC, HARVEST, NOEL, BOO,  let me know in the comment section what words you used.

  1. This is awesome. I love the creativity of the "M". Did you incorporate your paper flowers into this or did you buy those?

  2. I didn't use my paper flowers on this project. You can make flat paper flowers to decorate something like this, but it takes a little different paper folding process. I actually bought three different flower packets from Michael's and arranged them all over the letter in no particular order.

Scrabble Letters

Sitting down and playing a good old game of scrabble was not always at the top of my list of things to do. I recently found my old game on the shelf and was ready to use it in a different way. This is a very simple project that will not take long. Here is what you will need: scrabble letters, scrapbook paper, button, canvas and hot glue gun. My canvas is 12 by 12 inches. This is a good size because most scrapbook paper is bigger in size so all you will have to do is just trim to fit the canvas. Then its just like playing scrabble use the letters to make whatever design you would like. In my first picture I used a last name, Milfury and then the family members. In the pictures below you will see I used the word Family and then words around it to explain what family means to me. I have also given this to a grandmother as a gift with all of her grand kids surrounding the grandmother word. You will have to really think about the layout before you start gluing. Once you find the right

string art

Loved this project. Took some time to get set up, but it was worth it. This is a project you can do alone or with a group of friends. String art is something I have wanted to try for a while. Now that we are remodeling our home I have extra wood around. I went out and grabbed a piece I thought would work for my project. Once you are ready, start sanding your piece of wood. This will help smooth the surface and help the paint hold better. Next step was to decide on a paint. I chose Dutch Boy satin white.  I had this the basement and worked great.  I also wanted a rustic look, so I took an old sock and dipped it in the paint.  Then I just started rubbing the paint in little sections over the piece of wood, this helped give it a weathered look. Next it was to start measuring my letters. I took an 8x11 piece of paper and cut out letters for the word HOME. I used block letters for this project giving it more roo
